Title: Paper 2 rewrite, by refrence to at least three poems by one or more poets, comments in detail on the way a poet uses language and imagery to develop meaning.
In many poems by a variety of poets uses imagery and language to display and develop the meaning of their poems. These two literary devices have proven to be of great significance in the three poems am going to talk about, “Not Waving But Drowning” by Stevie Smith, ‘Jilted’ Sylvia Plath and “Dulce Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen, it does not only tells the reader about the purpose of the poem by also enhances the feeling when reading the poem.

“Not Waving But Drowning” by Stevie Smith tries to convey the message of, not to ignore other people that are suffering around you, instead, try to help them.
The title itself is already a significant imagery and language used in the poem. Not waving by drowning shows us a man that is “drowning,” which in this case is a metaphor for a person suffering of in need of help, is seen as “waving” which is a causal or normal action. The metaphor that forms the imagery clearly brings us back to the purpose of the poem, which is not to see the people that are “drowning”, in need of help, as waving, being fine and normal.

In this poem, “Nobody heard him, the dead man, But still he lay moaning,” again Stevie Smith tells us the purpose of the poem by showing imagery by the use of language. “The dead man” is a metaphor of a man that is suffering but not dead, instead, the word ‘dead’ was used to describe how lifeless, still and motionless this man is. The image of how this ‘dead man’ is moaning shows how much he wanted to be helped and the pain he is going through seems to be unbearable. Stevie Smith then convey the purpose of the poem by saying ,”Nobody heard him,” which means everyone around the man, who is suffering, is just ignoring him. Which tells and shows us once again, how painful the person feels when he or she is ignored by other people.
